Today I'm posting twice! This post is letting you know about Taming Rafe, and the other post is the start of a Bible study of sorts on another book I'm reading. I hope you can read both today!
I'm reluctant to read books that aren't the beginning of a series but I didn't have my hands on Book 1 of the Noble Legacy, Reclaiming Nick. Reading Taming Rafe showed me the books stand alone, but are so character rich, you want to read the series. If you peek at my Shelfari list, you'll see I'll be tackling Nick's story next, and then I am wishing to read Book 3.
This book captured my time and more than that, my heart because it was so much more than rebel cowboy angers rich girl. Like I mentioned, Susan May Warren brought these characters to life. They weren't cardboard cutout stereotypes, they were real, fully dimensional and totally engaging. Their problems were realistic, the family situations were not perfect, and there was also elements of mystery, suspense, and enough variables for romance I felt at times the book was combustible.
Where Rafe Noble is a hurting (physically, emotionally and spiritually) cowboy and not afraid to be anti social no matter the consequences, Katherine Breckenridge isn't going to surrender her plans that involve Rafe. The tit for tat these two play as she visits the ranch was amazing. Katherine was strong, fierce in her loyalties and undettered. I loved how they interacted from beginning to end.
What else I found endearing about this book was that it contained a story within a story. I don't want to give too much away because I want you to read it but throughout the book a couple characters keep picking up a book they both can relate to. They have no clue how close that book and the author hit close to home. As a reader, I find this a creative idea. As a writer, I find it an amazing feat to pull off. It works well.
Hopefully I gave you just enough for you to picture the saddles, the cowboy hats, the sun setting on the ranch as you race to get your copy of Taming Rafe to see what goes on in this book.

Julie,
You've got my attention! "Taming Rafe" sounds great and a free copy sounds fantastic. Count me in, please. I'll be reading all the links you included on your site today, as well as your usual Sunday blog on the Christian Writers forum. How on earth do you manage to DO so much?! All your writing alone must keep you busy a good 22 hours of the day! Keep up the great work, though. I'm enjoying it all tremendously!
Blessings,
Deb
